FIU's Department of Journalism and Broadcasting is internationally-known for preparing students to be outstanding journalists who can report, write, produce video and multimedia stories that capture life in the rapidly urbanizing community of South Florida. SJMC classes train students to work in the new media landscape by offering hands-on skills, and encouraging students to experiment, innovate and think entrepreneurially. SJMC grads are sought after by all the major media in South Florida-English and Spanish-language and can be found working in newsrooms and broadcast studios as reporters, anchors and digital specialists at local, national and international levels.

The complex field of Public Relations includes the strategic integration of such sub-disciplines as media relations, corporate communications, crisis communications and public diplomacy. The SJMC Public Relations program is designed to give our students a general background in the elements of strategic communications, in addition to preparing them for a career in Public Relations with emphasis on the four sub-disciplines.

Digital Communication and Media - Digital Broadcasting

Digital Broadcasting students will learn the critical thinking and technical skills needed to produce digital media content and distribute that content across multiple communication platforms. They will engage multiple and diverse audiences through a strong foundation in social media and networking, as well as learn methods and strategies for ensuring their communication attains maximum impact. Digital broadcast majors will learn how to write, shoot, edit, produce and direct video for traditional and digital media platforms.

Graduates may be employed in all sectors of the communication field, including news organizations, TV and video production companies and strategic communication companies.

Digital Communication and Media -Digital Interactive Media

Digital + Interactive Media provides a foundation for students in data visualization and creating data-driven narratives for public communication. Combining critical and cultural aspects of social media, the degree offers hands-on instruction in web analytics and content creation. Students in this major can expect to take courses in interactive media, motion graphics, digital theories, visual design and more.

Digital Communication and Media - Digital Journalism

Digital Communication and Media - Digital TV and Multimedia Production

Digital TV + Multimedia Production allows for a course of study in 21st Century television and multimedia communication. Students gain updated fundamentals in the industry’s best practices as well as training in studio production and writing for television. They will also be exposed to technology-driven facets of the industry, such as motion graphic production, podcasting, social media production and web development.

Interior Architecture Accelerated Masters Program

As a Master of Interior Design student, you engage interior architecture in a refreshingly effective manner. Our graduates work in many different settings designing commercial interior architecture. They possess strong professional and content background, and are capable of thoughtful, creative design activities. The program is a comprehensive accredited professional degree program designed to involve students in advanced study of public interiors. Students participate in two years of interdisciplinary foundation undergraduate coursework followed by three years of graduate professional curriculum. A baccalaureate degree is not awarded at any point in the course of study. The unique full-time curriculum centers on the ten-studio sequence that provides students with firsthand experience of a wide range of interior design issues.

Landscape Architecture Accelerated Masters Program

The fully accredited Master of Landscape Architecture program prepares students for a professional degree in one of the more exciting fields of the 21st century. Landscape architects are engaged in the meaningful and sustainable transformation of our built and natural environment. Our program focuses on design and draws from both art, science and technology via a rich design studio sequence that begins with a two year interdisciplinary foundation that is followed by three years of graduate studies. Students explore environmental, ecological and urban issues, and propose innovative solutions in the design of public spaces, infrastructure, urban planning, industrial reclamation, ecotourism, environmental mitigation and many other areas at the center of the relationship between human beings and their surroundings.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is a flexible research-based multidisciplinary degree. In consultation with faculty advisors, students craft a plan of study tailored to their own particular musical interests, which may also be combined with areas outside of music.
